From MySQL to MariaDB

Tools / Thursday, April 25th, 2019

I’ve long see-sawed on the question of MariaDB vs. MySQL, but today I think I’ve crossed the border.

It came about when reading up a blog post on MySQL that contained an interesting topic — data masking. The important applications are limited access to the database, GDPR compliance, etc.

Fun part? It’s not possible to do data masking in the MySQL community edition! You need the enterprise edition for that. Wow, thanks much, Oracle!

Where in MariaDB, masking has been around for some time in the MaxScale engine.

Even “our beloved” PostgreSQL lacks in this department.

I had heard that the pace of innovation in MariaDB is excellent, and I’ve seen it now.
